Thankful...

  • Nov. 26th, 2009 at 10:18 PM
...for my Partner, my loves, my passions, my Families of Blood and Families of Heart, for Tribes that I never realized I was **part of** until... there they were. I'm thankful for the health I have, and the meds and technology that make what I don't have manageable. I'm thankful that I *usually* have a spoon or two to spare, and sometimes find one or two to share. I'm thankful there are people who know how I'm crazy and keep me anyway.

I hope to continue to be someone who can put things together, compassionate, caring, inspiring, aspiring, creative, capable, and occasionally competent. I strive to Be Better every day. Some days I think I get it right.

But enough about you

ONTD posted an interview I did for Fandomania. Amusing comments. A lesbian thinks I'm hot. Sorry, Peter Vadala.

...is the pardoning of the Whitehouse turkey. Now, I know that a number of you will be insisting that this has been going on for a long time. Truth is, the first Whitehouse turkey to get pardoned was not that long ago. Seriously, the first time a president pardoned the Whitehouse turkey was in 1989 by George H. W. Bush. He then pardoned a turkey every year, establishing the tradition.

Drill press sewing

  • Nov. 26th, 2009 at 8:45 PM
As a side project to keep me sane, I've been working on a decorative version of the electro-mechanical sunglasses which use the (very expensive!) brass gears that I originally bought but was unable to use. One of the things I wanted to try was making them full goggles, as the weight of the original version required a strap anyway. I wanted to make leather rings for the eye padding, which is why I bought the surprisingly leather jacket mentioned earlier.

I made a pattern, cut them out, and started sewing last Sunday. It was very, very slow going, hand-sewing through two layers of leather. I managed to get one done, poorly, and the next day my finger/wrist joints were NOT happy. There has to be a better way, I thought. Why don't I use the drill press sitting in the kitchen? All that lovely mechanical advantage to push the needle through. But getting it all lined up will be a pain, and I'll still have to pull it the rest of the way through each time. Unless...

...unless I used the drill press as a sewing machine!

So I chucked a sewing machine needle (the kind with the eye at the tip) up in the drill press, and tried piercing the leather -- SO EASY. And away I went. As it turns out, sewing this way isn't too bad. You're just replicating the motion of a mechanical sewing machine, using a second needle and thread to replace the bobbin. The results were 10x better looking, and didn't involve any joint pain. There have been a couple other bits of leather sewing I'm still doing by hand, but for all the big, complicated stretches I've been doing it this way, including redoing the original piece.

More pics and explanation )

A brief search didn't show any evidence of this approach being documented before. (Maybe because who has a drill press and no sewing machine?) So I'm laying my claim to it with this post. Index away, Google!

Hi,

According to my dictionary:
sorry = es tut mir leid

But doesn't es tut mir leid mean 'it hurts me'?
Can you say es tut ihneen leid to say you're sorry?

[WRITTEN LAST WEEK; FORGOT TO POST]:

I am thankful for my health, when I have it, and for my patience when I don't. I am grateful that I find energy to write each day no matter that health. I am thankful for the sun that rises each day, even though I don't always see it thanks to the clouds. I am grateful to the clouds that bring rain and replenish the world and soothes the parched tongue.

I am grateful for the food that makes its way to our through many small steps to our table, and for having a place in which to eat it. I am grateful for my loved ones--friends and family--and most of all the smiling face of my bright-eyed daughter. I am thanful that I sometimes possess the wisdom to shut up when necessary, and for the courage to speak out.

In my gratitude, I must acknowledge that above every other reason to praise whatever, or whomever people wish to praise, I am grateful to simply be here. What a gift each day that brings its pains and sorrows and joys. What blessing that I open my eyes every morning to a new day yet unwritten, and even when one day seems much lie the last, to be able to place my head on a pillow each night to dream, for I am grateful for this opportunity to live and dream and create each day that dawns and fades.

I just sometimes need to be reminded, and for that I am thankful.

Happy Thanksgiving

I still haven't decided how I should feast today. I suspect I won't do anything special, and instead splurge a little over the weekend.

Most animal lovers would be happy to have a dog, or even a cat as their constant and loyal companion.

But naturalist Casey Anderson has taken that a step further and adopted an 58-stone grizzly bear called Brutus, who he has raised since birth.

The pair are inseparable and are so close that when Anderson married Charlie and the Chocolate Factory actress Missi Pyle in August last year, the bear stood in as best man.

Brutus is never left out and even joins in the Anderson family thanksgiving activities

Casey Anderson talks more about Brutus over here and here, where he addresses some of the concerns people are having.
